Another weekend without Furious. *sigh* We usually go out on a date and catch a flick if there’s something worth watching. If he was here, we would’ve watched Hancock together. Since he’s not, I watched the movie with some of my friends from the office. Fortunately Paper Tilapia came without her man because the others had a date to tag along and I would have been the only person who didn’t have a partner. Harharhar!
So about the movie, I know most of you already know the gist of the story. Will Smith plays the superhero that everybody loves to hate because of his careless, cocky, and sarcastic attitude. Hancock’s well-intentioned heroics always seemed to cost the city millions of dollars in damage. People were ready to boot him out of their city but this all changed when he saved the life of Ray played by Jason Bateman.
I actually wasn’t expecting much from this movie because I watched I Am Legend and it was a complete flop. I thought Hancock would be all hype as well but I was wrong. Will Smith attacked his role in a different way this time because he was not his usual witty and funny self. Yes there were times that he still made the audience laugh but he was very toned down this time. All I can say is that this movie is different and it is worth your bucks because it’s a refreshing change from all the other superhero movies that graced the screens recently.
You see, what I loved about this movie is that it had a different take on a superhero’s life. Yes Hancock was a good guy right from the start but he was not the typical superhero with a clean cut and clean shaven face that came wrapped in a spandex costume. He had powers that can save everybody’s life but his own until PR executive Ray and his family came along. Kind hearted Ray made it his task to change Hancock’s life for the better even though his wife Mary, played by Charlize Theron, was so against it from the start. In my opinion, Ray seemed to be the true hero in this movie because he saved the world by giving them a “new and improved” Hancock and he managed to do that without super powers.
However, this movie comes with a few downsides too. One is that the villains’ characters were not developed. It was like they were supplied in the movie just to say that there was an antagonist to the protagonist. Also, there were scenes that were too bland so it gave me an excuse to visit the little ladies room in the middle of the movie when I was supposed to be glued to my seat.
I’m not going any further because I might spoil it for those of you who haven’t watched Hancock yet – but I would have to say that the twist in this movie makes it worth watching. All in all Hancock was a “Good job!” (You need to watch the movie to know why I’m using that phrase
). Have a blessed Sunday F & F friends!
